Origin and treatment of the hides
The cowhides of MooMoo are mainly originated from Brasil. The cowhide is in fact a rest product of the meatindustry. Countries like Brasil and Argentinia are well known for their beef.
Of course they take in account the value of the hides, when trading the cows, but the cows are certainly not bred for their hides only. This would make the prices of the hides
go through the roof!
Most of the hides are used in the leather industry, like for furniture, clothing and shoes. A small part is being used as complete hair on hides. These are also often used in products
like bags and furniture.
The quality of the hides from MooMoo is extremely high. The hides are quite thick, which results in the hide not loosing its hairs. The tanning is done with the so called Chrome Tanning.
This is the best way of tanning the hides, because they stay very flexible and will therefor not ' break' if you fold them or stand on. The Chome Tanning can be recognised at the backside of the hides.
They will always appear in a slightly blue colour. These kind of hides will remain their beauty for years and can easily be used as a rug.
Measuring a cowhide
There are different ways of measuring a hide. The most common ones used in the leather industry, are the light tables. With these one can exactly measure the square foot of the hide.
But it doesn't say anything about the lenght and width of the hide.
At MooMoo we calculate the size in two different ways. First of all there's the 4 point measure. We measure the size of the total length and the length of the spine in the middle.
For the width, we measure at the belly and at the backlegs. This way of measuring is quite a lot of work and can still be confusing.
That's why we use the third method to measure the
sizes of the hides. We measure the belly of the hide for the width and the spine for the length. As it shows in the picture below. So please be aware, that the total size of the hide is
about 40 - 50 cm longer and wider!  |
